How we review and rank dehumidifiers

Last updated October 15, 2026

This page is the single statement of how crawlspacedehumidifiers.org compares products, where its numbers come from and what money changes hands. The shorter methodology notes on the best-of page and the about page are summaries of this one.

What we do, and what we do not do

Our comparisons are research-based. For every unit we read the manufacturer's spec sheet, manual and product page, check the ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier list for its certification status, and read the retailer listings we link to. We then compare the units on what those documents say.

We have not installed, run or tested these dehumidifiers ourselves. There is no test chamber, no humidity logger and no long-term trial behind any ranking on this site, and we do not pretend otherwise. We also never publish ratings, star scores, customer reviews or test results we did not source. If a product page carries no rating, that is because we have none that we can verify.

Where every number comes from

Each product page lists its sources and a “verified” date, which is the day we last read those sources. Capacity is the AHAM 80°F pints-per-day rating; where the manufacturer also publishes a DOE 65°F or 73°F figure we show that too, because it is closer to crawl space conditions. Coverage, dimensions, weight, noise, amperage, filtration and warranty are copied from the manufacturer's documents.

A field the manufacturer does not publish is shown as “Not stated”. We never estimate it, average it from similar models or take it from a retailer's marketing copy. Where two sources disagree, the product page shows both figures and says which is which.

Prices are read from one named retailer page and carry that retailer's name and the date we read them. A sale price is marked as a sale. If we cannot read a current price on a retailer page, the product has no price and is not ranked.

How rankings are built

The order on the best crawl space dehumidifiers page is decided by four factors, applied to the verified specifications only:

  1. Verified capacity for the money. AHAM pints per day per $100 of the verified price, with weight given to a published DOE 65°F or 73°F figure where one exists.
  2. Warranty terms. The length of the warranty and what the fine print actually covers after the first year.
  3. Filtration and efficiency. The standard filter grade (MERV-13 above MERV-8 above optional or MERV-1), the published COP or energy factor, and ENERGY STAR status. Certification is taken from the ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier list, never from a retailer title or a maker claim. “Most Efficient” is a separate designation that we cite only where the ENERGY STAR list itself flags the model as meeting the Most Efficient criteria.
  4. Completeness of published specs. A unit with unverified dimensions, noise or amperage ranks below one with a full spec sheet, all else equal, because you cannot plan an installation around numbers that do not exist.

Capacity per dollar on its own would produce a different order, and the best-of page prints those figures so you can see it. When two units are close on all four factors, the longer and broader warranty goes first; if they are still level, the more complete spec sheet wins, and after that the lower verified price. Whether a unit has a built-in pump decides which pages it appears on, not where it ranks. Affiliate commission rates play no part in the order at any step.

Independence and money

The site earns commissions through affiliate links, including as an Amazon Associate and through programs run by Sylvane and manufacturers that sell direct. No manufacturer or retailer pays for placement, sends us units, or sees a page before it is published. The affiliate disclosure lists the programs. If we ever sell featured listings in the installer directory, each one will be labelled as a paid placement on the page; today there are none.

Update cadence

We re-read prices and availability at least quarterly, and we re-check specifications whenever a manufacturer revises a manual or renames a line. The verified date on a product page and the price date beside each price show the last check. If you spot an error, send it through the contact page; we check the claim against the original source, fix the page and update its verified date.
